VOLCANO VILLAGE

Volcano Village is a quaint country town rainforest, adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with two general stores, gas stations and post office. It is a rainforest at 3,000 ft. elevation. The heavy rainfall on this windward east coast all the way to Hilo, is of course, the reason for its lush tropical rain forest environment. Volcano Village also offers shopping, museums, dining and an 18 hole golf course. The Village is centrally located on the Big Island of Hawaii between historic Hilo, and the resort area of Kailua-Kona. If you plan to visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Mt. Kilauea area , it is convenient to stay in this town for a night or two.

It boasts of a few good restaurants. On our first night, we had dinner at Surt's, a restaurant that offers fusion cuisine (Asian-European). It has received very good reviews. The moonfish and opakapaka are yummy!

We also tried dinner at the Kilauea Lodge where the fireplace is known to have been burning fire logs for over 100 years. Their prime rib was so-so but they have delicious macadamia-mango pie that tastes like good carrot cake.

We stayed here at the Mountain House. We had the entire place to ourselves. It is quite a luxurious bed and breakfast home with three bedrooms, three and a half baths, two spacious living rooms, 2 fireplaces, formal dining area, an interior design of Oriental motif with rich koa wood and accents, a fully equipped state-of-the-art kitchen, wet bar, cable tv, VCR and stereo, and a scenic view of the lush rainforest on three acres of private, landscaped grounds with an abundance of orchids and birds.
